I have dedicated my career to advancing public education, with 32 years in the classroom as a teacher. I still substitute teach so I can stay current and continue to work with young people. I have 25 years as an elected official of the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation and the Saskatoon Teachers’ Association, and 6 as an appointed board member of the SPTRB, the regulatory body for teachers, including as Vice-Chair and Chair. I am proud of the work that my colleagues and I do to lift up the students of Saskatoon Public Schools, and I am also keenly aware that children continue to fall through the cracks. Like the other candidates, I believe that education deserves increased stable funding, every student deserves to thrive, and thriving students need thriving staff to support them. What sets me apart is my current and extensive experience with educational matters as well as wide ranging experience with board governance and a proven track record of effecting change in large, complex and established organizations. If you have questions or comments, I’d love to have a conversation. Email me at electmurrayguest@gmail.com..
Strong, accessible public education is essential to building thriving and inclusive communities. As your school trustee, I will work to create the conditions for every student and every school to succeed by:
Putting Students at the Centre - Keeping the needs, experiences, and success of students at the heart of Board decisions.
Advocating for Sustainable Funding - Calling for adequate, stable funding that gives schools the resources they need to meet students’ needs.
Supporting the People Who Support Students - Advocating for strong, respectful relationships between the Board, teachers, and support staff to foster healthy schools where students and staff can thrive.
My partner, Vanessa, our two boys, and I all received our education in Saskatoon Public Schools. After graduating from the public school system, I earned:
Bachelor of Science (BSc)
Bachelor of Education (BEd)
Master of Education (MEd) in Educational Foundations
These experiences have provided me with significant insight into the operations of publicly funded schools and school divisions. They have also allowed me to explore a variety of theories of education and understand how education is delivered throughout many areas of the world.
With 32 years of teaching experience, I have continued a path of lifelong learning and service in areas such as:
Delivering training to teachers
Governance and the role of trustees
Contract negotations (collective bargaining) at the provincial and local level
Delivering educational conventions and workshops
I am an award winning classroom teacher who has been trained in International Baccalaureate (IB) methodology as well as Advanced Placement (AP) curricula, both of which are internationally recognized education systems available to high school students.
During my teaching career, I volunteered extensively to enhance the school experience for students and staff, and strengthened my governance skills by:
Being elected to many positions within the Saskatoon Teachers' Association
Sitting on the negotiating committee for teachers for over a decade, working collaboratively with the division to improve student and teacher working conditions
Being elected to the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation Executive
Sitting on the SPTRB for 6 years, ending my tenure as chair
Chairing the Teacher Education Certification Committee for 2 years
Sitting on the Governance Committee of the STF for 4 years
Sitting on the bargaining committee of the STF for 2 years
Volunteering extensively with student extra-curricular programs, including soccer programming, Math and Physics Clubs, and Remembrance Day programs
Collaborating with the U of S to found the Nobel Prize Symposium and the Let's Do Nuclear! nuclear radiation workshops, both of which continue to operate and serve students today
On October 6, the candidates gathered at Silverwood Heights School with members of Ward 5 for speeches and questions. Here is a reddit thread and a Facebook page with thoughts about the evening.
